ESCALATE is part of the AEVETO cluster (Advanced Electric Vehicles for Efficient and Economic Transport Operations) activities. Together with 6 other European funded projects, the AEVETO cluster will work together to ensure the highest impact of zero-emission road freight transport in Europe.
The AEVETO cluster represents a pioneering initiative dedicated to revolutionizing the landscape of heavy-duty transport through the collaborative synergy of R&D projects funded by the European Commission. Focused on Zero Emission Heavy Duty Vehicles, AEVETO creates and provides a common umbrella or vision of key EU projects, propelling the development and adoption of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) within the heavy-duty sector.

Our vision is to spearhead the transition towards the next generation of electric mobility in Europe by 2030-40. By aligning with the ambitious targets and timelines outlined in the 2ZERO partnership, the ERTRAC electrification roadmap, ALICE roadmap towards zero emission logistics, and the SET Plan, the AEVETO cluster aims to catalyze a paradigm shift in the transportation industry. Through collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to sustainability, we envision a future where Zero Emission Heavy Duty Vehicles are not just a reality but a dominant force on European roads.
The AEVETO cluster recognizes that the collective impact of joint efforts surpasses individual project outcomes. By leveraging synergies across diverse projects, we, as the representatives of key EU projects, seek to amplify our influence, contributing significantly to the broader goals of the 2ZERO partnership and the electrification roadmap set forth by ERTRAC. Our commitment extends beyond project boundaries, aiming for a holistic transformation of the heavy-duty transport sector.
In adherence to the ALICE, 2ZERO and ERTRAC 2021 Electrification Roadmap, AEVETO identifies affordability and driving range improvement as crucial enablers for increasing Electric Vehicle (EV) market penetration. These areas serve as focal points for the cluster, where we pledge substantial contributions. Through technological advancements, collaborative research, and knowledge exchange, AEVETO endeavors to overcome barriers and accelerate the widespread adoption of Zero Emission Heavy Duty Vehicles in Europe.
As we navigate the journey towards a sustainable future, AEVETO envisions a landscape where Advanced Electric Vehicles for Efficient and Economic Transport Operations not only redefine industry standards but also serve as catalysts for environmental durability and economic prosperity. Together, we are shaping a future where the heavy-duty transport sector plays a pivotal role in achieving a carbon-neutral and sustainable Europe.
EMPOWER aims to develop two flexible, modular, and scalable zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles (ZE HDV). One vehicle will be 100% electric for regional deliveries (400 km range), while the other will be a hybrid fuel cell and battery-powered for long-haul distances (750 km range). Both vehicles will undergo a 6-month demonstration at TRL8 on European roads and International corridors, with development led by an experienced consortium of academic and industrial partners from Europe.
H2Haul will test 16 vehicles in real-world operations at sites in Belgium, France, Germany, and Switzerland. The innovative hydrogen refueling stations to be deployed will offer rapid, high-capacity fueling and thus support the demonstration of how fuel cell trucks can operate as direct replacements for diesel vehicles, with the same driving range and load capacity but with zero emissions.
MORELife will demonstrate improvements of materials and operating strategies to enhance the durability and reliability of fuel cells stacks in heavy duty truck application. Degradation issues based on real life application data will be identified. With these key degradation issues identified, highly specific accelerated stress tests (ASTs) for a shortened test duration for lifetime verification as well as advanced degradation models will be developed.
NextETRUCK – Efficient and Affordable Zero Emission Logistics Through Next-Generation Electric Trucks – aims to play a pioneering role in the decarbonisation of vehicle fleets, demonstrating next-generation e-mobility concepts. The project contributes to zero-emission vehicles and ecosystems that are holistic, innovative, affordable, competitive, and synergetic.
The ZEFES (Zero Emissions flexible vehicle platforms with modular powertrains serving the long-haul Freight Eco System) project has officially started on the 1st of January 2023. The ZEFES project will contribute to the aims and objectives set out in the Green Deal and 2ZERO partnership, where Europe commits itself to be the first CO2 neutral continent by 2050. ZEFES is a 3,5-year project aiming to deploy 9 different long-haul truck configurations (BEV and FCEV) in various use cases covering important TEN-T corridors in Europe.
